2018 Nobel Peace Prize Awarded to Activists campaigning against the use of rape as a weapon of war
Nadia Murad Basee Taha is an Iraqi Yazidi human rights activist. In 2014 she was kidnapped and held by Daesh (the Islamic State) for three months. She has used her own story of enslavement and rape to draw international attention to the plight of Yazidi community as well as girls and women who have suffered extreme abuse by Daesh. Dr. Denis Mukwege is a Congolese gynecologist. He established and maintains the Panzi Hospital in Bukavu, where he specializes in the treatment of women who have been raped by armed rebels. He has become the world’s leading specialist in the treatment of wartime sexual violence and a global campaigner against the use of rape as a weapon of war.
